چکیده

Mathematical calculations of muscle forces often require an estimate of a given muscle’s capacity to generate force. A traditional way of expressing a muscle’s fora generating capacity is in terms of its ‘physiological cross-sectional area’ (degned by muscle volume or muscle mass divided by either gross musck length or muscle fiber length with or without accounting for pennation) (Brand et al.. 1981: Close, 1972; Crowninshield and Brand. IPRI; Crowninshield et a/., 1978; Fict. 19l& Haxton. 1944; lkai and Fukunaga. 1968; Morris, 1949; Pierrynowski. 1982 Spector er uf.. 1980). Sina no study reports systematically colkctcd muscle liber length in all lower limb muscles, including hip muscles, we conducted the following work.

Are current measurements of lower extremity muscle architecture accurate?

Skeletal muscle architecture is defined as the arrangement of fibers in a muscle and functionally defines performance capacity. Architectural values are used to model muscle-joint behavior and to make surgical decisions. The two most extensively used human lower extremity data sets consist of five total specimens of unknown size, gender, and age. Therefore, it is critically important to generat...

How muscle fiber lengths and velocities affect muscle force generation as humans walk and run at different speeds.

The lengths and velocities of muscle fibers have a dramatic effect on muscle force generation. It is unknown, however, whether the lengths and velocities of lower limb muscle fibers substantially affect the ability of muscles to generate force during walking and running. We examined this issue by developing simulations of muscle-tendon dynamics to calculate the lengths and velocities of muscle ...

The effect of isometric contractions of upper and lower limb muscles on the ultrasonic thickness of the transversus abdominis muscle

Background: The transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle is one of the most important muscles that contribute to the stability of the lumbar spine. Strengthening of trunk muscles that have a significant role in trunk stability is very important in the field of professional sport, sport medicine and rehabilitation of patient with low back pain (LBP). Identifying the exercises that can improve the stren...

Multiple Sclerosis Affects Skeletal Muscle Characteristics

BACKGROUND The impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) on skeletal muscle characteristics, such as muscle fiber cross sectional area (CSA), fiber type proportion, muscle strength and whole muscle mass, remains conflicting. METHODS In this cross sectional study, body composition and muscle strength of the quadriceps were assessed in 34 MS (EDSS: 2.5±0.19) patients and 18 matched healthy controls (HC...

بررسی پایایی مقیاس اصلاح شده اشورت در ارزیابی اسپاستیسته عضلات در بیماران همی پلژیک

Background and Aim: Spasticity is a velocity-dependent increase in tonic stretch reflexes (muscle tone) with exaggerated tendon jerks, resulting from hyperexcitability of the stretch reflex. The measurement of spasticity is necessary to determine the effect of treatments. The Modified Ashworth Scale is the most widely used method for assessing muscle spasticity in clinical practice and research...
